June Monthly Meeting - Chasing Sunfish and Cichlids, NOT just for kids - Shawn Rakes @ London Tract Meeting House
  1. Shawn will cover recent developments in taxonomy of the sunfishes across the U.S. as late as 2017/2018 genetic research by fisheries biologist graduate students has revealed a cornucopia of species that were once thought to be all the same in separate river drainages across the U.S., mostly in the southeast and midwest. It was discovered that above the fall-line on these drainages that specialization has occurred overtime through isolation.
  2. Shawn will cover his experiences in 3-4 different areas of the U.S. where incredible sunfish species can be purposefully pursued including: Texas hill country, the Everglades, Arkansas, and Alabama. He will provide examples and photos of strategy, flies, species, and other gear or challenges.
  3. Lastly, Shawn will briefly talk about his charter business, fishing on DELMARVA, and take questions.

Originally from Harford County, MD Shawn lives in Millington, MD on the Chester River and previously was a long-time resident of Slower Lower, DE. He went to undergraduate at the University of Great Falls, MT and has a Masters of Military Leadership from Wilmington University (DE). Full-time he works as a Logistics Officer for the Delaware Army National Guard in New Castle, Delaware. He has over 25 years of total service and two overseas deployments. He has fished all over the lower 48, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, and has an IGFA WR for 16lbs tippet for Chain Pickerel. His passion is traveling to new places and targeting endemic species on the fly. His next big trip is to Vietnam in 2026 where he hopes to get the Giant Snakehead on fly (and some other fish). Mostly he likes taking people fly fishing to help them achieve individual goals like first saltwater fish on fly, first fish on fly, or catching a new species.
